Calling ALL Prayer Warriors! Please read the following update about my neighbor’s daughter Holly and pray like you’ve never prayed before…
Dear Team Holly,
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to give you an update and rally “Team Holly” for continued prayers. I briefly mentioned the need for quarterly cancer scans in my last group email. They were originally scheduled for December 15th, but given the need to surgically remove my non-MRI compatible implanted spinal simulator before I could have any further scans (and the scheduling challenges of doing this over the holidays), the follow-up scans got delayed until Monday (1/9). The GOOD NEWS with this timing was our family had a wonderful Christmas together, enjoying each other’s company and all our favorite traditions. The BAD NEWS is we got BAD NEWS in this first pre-amputation scan: the cancer has metastasized through the blood stream and I now have multiple tumors on each of my lungs. They are giving me around a year to live, but even this is a big guess. Really only God knows.
The next week or so I’ll have a biopsy, additional tests, appointments and discussions about chemo options (which may “buy me some more time”). For us as a family, we’re starting the strange process of talking very openly about this reality, how we want to spend the time together we do have, and the values we want to guide decision-making on this tough journey. As you might expect, this news hits hard, and the immediate family is still in shock processing it all. With so many unknowns, we take comfort in the KNOWING with certainty, the ending of this story: GOD ALWAYS WINS. He is inviting us to find a “thinness” between heaven and earth, and to rest in the hope that He will walk with us in the sorrow. Indeed, in walking this earthly journey of death we are confident God will teach us what it means to fully LIVE for Him.
We appreciate your prayers and words of encouragement. In the coming days, as we know more, we’ll be in touch, and have started a Caring Bridge website which we will use, in lieu of sending group emails. We will post “Team Holly” updates here:
https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/teamhollymiles. There’s a box you can check on the Caring Bridge website if you’d like to receive an email notification anytime we add an update to the site. You’re also free to check the site now and then as you wish. Throughout this journey, our commitment to you – our precious family and friends – is to keep you well-informed and be as specific as we can about our needs and preferences in various stages.
We’ll close with this: we’re confident the moments, conversations, and connections of 2017 will be some of the most precious of our family’s lives, and we’re so thankful for each one of you and the gifts you will give us in friendship and community throughout this journey.

I spoke with Gretchen (Holly’s mom and our next door neighbor) today, and she is processing this news. She is such an inspirational lady and quoted this verse to me:
Psalm 112:1, 7-8 Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands…Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
